About GiveWell

Who We Are:

GiveWell is a nonprofit dedicated to finding outstanding giving opportunities and publishing the full details of our analysis to help donors decide where to give. Unlike charity evaluators that focus solely on financials, we conduct in-depth research aiming to determine how much good a given program accomplishes per dollar spent. Rather than try to rate as many charities as possible, we focus on the few charities that stand out on our criteria: evidence, cost-effectiveness, room for more funding and transparency. This focus enables us to find and confidently recommend the best giving opportunities possible: our top charities. In 2016, GiveWell tracked over $90 million in donations to its seven top charities as a direct result of its research. GiveWell's Incubation Grants program also made $12.4 million in grants to support the development of future top charities, sized between $200,000 and $6.4 million.

What We Offer:

GiveWell recommends evidence-backed, cost-effective giving opportunities in global health and development. We conduct in-depth analyses of both interventions and charities to develop our recommendations.

Our 'priority programs' are interventions whose impact has been demonstrated in rigorous studies and which are at least as cost-effective as cash transfers to extremely poor households. We complete initial assessments of a large number of interventions and then prioritize for in-depth evidence reviews and cost-effectiveness modeling. We publish our intervention research here.

GiveWell then works with charities implementing priority programs to determine whether they meet our criteria for top charities.

Through our research on interventions and charities, we also identify opportunities to make Incubation Grants that could led to top charity recommendations in the future.

We encourage organizations interested in our process and how to apply to contact chelsea.tabart@givewell.org for more information.
