Poultry is an important source of inexpensive protein as well as a $4 billion industry in Kenya. Surehatch, a South African company, manufactures egg incubators including small-scale models specifically for smallholder use. Using the incubator can increase hatch rates tenfold over traditional practices. Surehatch is selling egg incubators and providing training and post-sales technical and veterinary support to smallholder farmers who will be able to start their own poultry production businesses.
Outcome:During this pilot project, Surehatch sold 250 smallholder egg incubators to individual farmers and farmer cooperatives and has established a trained salesforce in Kenya. More than a third of its Kenyan customers are women, and it is expanding into other African countries.
