Kitovu is a social enterprise that uses data to eliminate guesswork and supply chain inefficiencies in African agriculture so as to enable smallholder farmers to make more money off their farms.

The Kitovu platform collects soil and market demand data. The soil data enables us to provide farmers with soil and crop specific fertilizers, as well as certified seeds and agrochemicals; which when combined with agribusiness practices successfully triples crop yields. The market demand data, on the other hand, enables us to give farmers information on the crop varieties and specifications to grow so as to guarantee offtake from commodity buyers. Kitovu provides farmers with yield increasing inputs and access to markets using its specially formulated custom fertilizer recommendation service and market demand data.

Problem

Farmers in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa achieve very low yields (a third of global yield averages according to a 2008 IFPRI World Development Report). Fragmented markets and the activities of middlemen means that smallholder farmers are unable to find markets which offer fair prices for their produce.

Solution

Kitovu provides quality and yield increasing inputs and access to markets by using remote sensing and data science to collect and analyze field, soil, and market demand data, enabling them to recommend precise inputs and markets. By providing farmers with precise inputs, soil and crop health insights, and access to markets, farmers are able to achieve a 30% reduction in the cost of production, double their yields, and achieve 100% sales of their farm produce.

Target Beneficiaries

The Kitovu model has 2 important stakeholders we serve – farmers/farmer-based organizations, and commodity buyers.

Mission and Vision

Our mission is to transform Africa into the food hub of the world by using technology to unlock yields and access to markets for smallholder farmers.

Competitive Advantage

By collecting soil and market demand data that we analyze and aggregate, we are able to accurately pinpoint the nutrient needs of a particular soil and get fertilizers that match that specific nutrient needs blended and supplied to the farmers. When these location-specific fertilizers are combined with quality seeds and good agricultural practices provided by our agent network, the result is a yield increase. This prevents soils from being poisoned with serious doses of mismatched fertilizers. This also means that farmers are able to grow more from fewer lands; as such, they don't have to clear more forests. It also means farmers spend less to produce more. The market demand data, on the other hand, enables us to give farmers information on the crop varieties and specifications to grow so as to guarantee offtake from commodity buyers. As a result, we are able to provide an end to end solution for farmers, from farm to market, in a way nobody else can.
