Using a blended education model centered on mobile phones we provide marginalized females access to quality business education, financial literacy and digital literacy using mobile phones, SMS, custom created videos and the mobile Teach By Tech app.

Teach By Tech’s solution uses instructor led blended learning models via mobile phones to provide safe, localized workforce training. Our curricula prioritize basic literacy and numeracy acquisition while equipping students with digital literacy and time management skills needed for successful employment. To begin the course, students meet with an instructor for digital literacy needs and understanding of mobile phone functions. Students are provided printed training manuals designed for low literacy learners. The manual includes explanation of concepts, visual prompts for understanding and learning activities. Students take pictures of completed learning activities and submit them to instructors via picture text or audio for feedback. Students have access to instructors via text throughout the course. We use traditional face to face instruction and/or synchronous and asynchronous video chats to provide students quality instruction. These meetings are held for 2 hours once a week to discuss new concepts and implement hands on instruction. Each week students receive a 10-15 minute custom, female centric video via text message or using our Teach By Tech app. All videos include embedded assessments which provide real time feedback to students, while offering instructors data on comprehension and viewership. Our app includes a dashboard of student progress using gamification and serves as a repository for all information and videos.

Problem

Around the world, travel, time, cost, security and family obligations prevent females from obtaining an education. Conflict and natural disaster cause gaps in education or eliminate the possibility of further education. This leaves many females lacking in basic literacy and numeracy skills and digital literacy proficiency, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation in the workforce. Though women have skills, they often lack the knowledge to create viable economic options for financial security.

Solution

Hybrid and remote learning models are ideal mediums for young adult and adult education. Each overcomes the obstacles of time and travel as it reduces the barriers of cost and security. Our models provide valuable interaction with quality instructors through SMS and direct instruction while offering interactive, custom videos that can be accessed any time through our app or direct downloads to SD cards. Our methods emphasize digital literacy, basic literacy and business education training.

Target Beneficiaries

Our focus is on vulnerable, marginalized, unmarried females ages 16-44. These women have been unable to attain or denied access to education leaving them illiterate or semi-literate. Currently, our focus is on women living in urban or semi-urban settings. Our programs are designed to be adaptable and malleable to the local needs. In this regard we look for local qualified educators that can be trained to use our model and further the reach of education.

Mission and Vision

Teach by Tech aims to empower vulnerable populations, especially women and girls, by using innovative technology to increase the accessibility of business education, entrepreneurial skills, digital literacy and financial literacy proficiency. We equip individuals with the resources they need to attain economic empowerment and realize self-sufficiency. We believe in the power of education as a conduit to financial security, gender equality and economic growth.

Competitive Advantage

In developing regions, participation in remote or hybrid education is constrained by technological infrastructure barriers. To overcome this, we have developed an app to eliminate the need of continued web connectivity. We emphasize digital literacy and create tutorials for students to master the 1st three stages of mobile literacy. All models are designed for dissemination on mobile phones. This allows for greater distribution of quality education and a wider reach to people who have been denied access to education; and permits us to bridge the capacity gaps many developing regions are experiencing. Our classes are designed to be inclusive and meet the needs of the community served. They are adaptable to provide localized instruction and facilitate the training of local teachers. Our LMS development measures learner engagement, outlines goals and benchmarks and develops communication and interaction between learners and instructors while offering flexible and self-paced learning.

Planned Goals and Milestones

We intend to diversify our course offerings and expand our geographical reach. We wish to further improve our platform by transitioning from a minimum viable product to full featured app inclusive of integrated texting, self-hosted video and enhanced progress tracking. We are also creating new language features for translation.
