The TempWatch is a novel, continuous temperature-monitoring bracelet which alerts if the newborn is hypothermic, thereby empowering the caretaker to warm the baby with KMC well before hypoxia, hypoglycemia, poor growth, or death can occur. In light to the Covid 19 crisis, Tempwatch is imensely instrumental as it warns parents against probable infections and reduces needless visits to the health centre.

BEMPU Health’s flagship product, the BEMPU TempWatch, addresses hypothermia and infection, two of the top causes of death and illness for the 23 million low birth weight babies born across the world each year. BEMPU Health’s flagship product, the BEMPU TempWatch, addresses hypothermia and infection, two of the top causes of death and illness for the 23 million low birth weight babies born across the world each year. This simple, innovative bracelet monitors a newborn during the first month of life in the home setting. An audiovisual alarm alerts caregivers immediately if hypothermia is occurring. Parents can then take action through skin-to-skin care before moderate or severe hypothermia can cause injury, facilitating improved thermal care of newborns. The accuracy of the device is clinically proven in multiple clinical studies. The intervention is also tested at community level in Rajasthan state in India. The finding showed that babies with the TempWatch gained more weight, received more KMC, and had a lower mortality rate than the case group (6% vs 14%). In addition to the TempWatch, BEMPU Health has developed KangaSling- a KMC wrap to promote Kangaroo Care ApneBoot- A wearable shoe which detect and auto correct Apnea is premature babies, BabyOnTrack- A parent service for proactive and immediate addressing of concerns for baby UBT- to manage PPH in low resource settings.

Problem

Hypothermia, affecting 32-85% of neonates globally, is among the top causes of neonatal deaths, also resulting in poor organ development and growth. Regular temperature monitoring is the standard of care. However, as part of our research in 120+ clinics, we saw: • In low-resource clinics, nurses often skip temperature readings among competing priorities • Parents cannot operate thermometers due to lack of awareness and education • KMC compliance by family members was extremely low at homes

Solution

TempWatch is a wearable temperature-monitoring wristband that continuously monitors a neonate’s temperature for 1 month in the clinic or at home. If a neonate enters into mild hypothermia (<36.5C), the device triggers a sound and light to alert the parents so they can perform KMC. This prevents further hypothermia and other deadly consequences. Multiple continuous alarms signal the infant is unable to maintain temperature, implying a possible infection and cause for seeking skilled help.

Target Beneficiaries

TempWatch is typically prescribed when a LBW baby is discharged from the hospital and then used at home, empowering families to monitor the health of their children. While standard thermometers require parents to take their baby’s temperature at regular intervals, TempWatch enables parents to simply monitor a baby’s temperature remotely and around the clock, including at night, with over 95.8% accuracy. Most importantly, the device is easy to use and does not require caretakers to be literate.

Mission and Vision

Over 4% of the world’s children die before their 5th birthday, and many of those surviving experience long-term health injuries. The vast majority of these deaths and injuries occur in low-resource parts of the world and are preventable. At BEMPU Health, our vision is for all children to have the chance to live full and healthy lives. To achieve this, BEMPU Health offers innovative life-saving health products for children in low-resource areas.

Competitive Advantage

Axillary thermometry –This is an accurate and standard method for temperature monitoring. However, even if trained, low-literacy parents are often unable to properly place the thermometer, nor interpret the Fahrenheit/Celsius scale and make a decision about the health of the newborn. TempWatch has a simple blue (baby is OK) or orange (baby is cold) light indication. Unlike TempWatch , standard thermometers also do not monitor continuously and so miss hypothermia especially at night. Hand-touch monitoring –By feeling the hands and chest, one can diagnose if the baby is hypothermic. However, this is not done continuously, specially when the mother is asleep, and even with skilled caretakers, it has been shown to have low sensitivity (74%) whereas TempWatch has a high (99%) sensitivity, rarely missing hypothermia.

Planned Goals and Milestones

The company is building strong sales teams, connecting to channel partners with robust distribution networks, generating clinical evidence on behavioral patterns around TempWatch. Direct funding will be needed to reach more babies in new geographies and/or support technical refinements to the tool. Improvements to reduce cost the cost and support the training, implementation and M&E support the public health organizations such as UNICEF procuring the device.
